Summer of 1984 I was 15. My step-father and I attended an All Time All Star Game at the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis.
After the game we waited outside to see if I could get some autographs. We weren’t waiting long when the door opened and out walked Joe DiMaggio. I had a four inch binder full of baseball cards and the photocopied flyer for a baseball card show. I used the binder as a hard surface for him to write on. I asked DiMaggio if I could have his autograph and handed him the binder. As he took the binder he handed me his uniform to hold while he signed. He commented how heavy the binder was. He talked with us for a couple minutes and then went on. I still can’t believe I was holding Joltin’ Joe’s pinstripes.
Before the night was over I had added Hank Aaron, Whitey Ford, Jim Piersall, Enos Slaughter, Moose Skowron, Tony Oliva, Carl Erskine and Minnie Minoso.
I’ve pulled a few autos this year, including a really nice Rafael Devers that books at about $80-$100 on Beckett but this worthless collection of signatures is priceless.
This piece was damaged in a flood in 2008. The mud stains are from that flood.
Thanks to Nick Diunte for confirming the Aaron and Minoso autographs.
